Welcome to Talking Shop

“We need more retail champions!”

In representing retailers I can see that there is little being done to woo them back into shopping centres.  The financial commitment expected of them is significant and they need a little persuasion that their investment decision is right and the route to completion smoothed a little.  Local authority town planners are keen for key retailers to come into their area but mostly lack a dedicated ‘retail champion’ to move this forward.

This was a fact lamented by David Atkins from Hammerson plc at a recent retail property networking breakfast and further endorsed by the recent British Retail Consortium report ’21 Century High Streets' -  a new vision for our town centres. Click here to open the report...

In my work with the Surrey-based ‘Support our Small Shops’ campaign I have been impressed by what can be achieved when all parties work towards a common goal particularly in these difficult times.  In a recent interview with Drapers Record  (see below) I was keen to champion the high street retailer.

Unless we have knowledgeable and driven individuals at authority level working hard to keep key retailers onboard we are likely to see our high street shopping centres in further decline.

In spite of all this…..yes I can spot a few green shoots!

Independents’ Day – Chapman advises retailers dealing with hard times

In a recent Drapers Record Recession Survival Guide featuring Mark Chapman, Director of Chapman Consulting, the main theme was still that independent retailers and their landlords need to engage in negotiations.

Chapman Consulting has joined forces with the Surrey traders campaign Support our Small Shops - spearheaded by Zac Goldsmith, Conservative Candidate for Richmond Park and driven by Andrea Craig.  The campaign has been gaining momentum in the borough of Richmond over the past eighteen months.

“We are so grateful of the support of experienced professionals like Mark. He offers such a valuable service to local retailers by helping them understand that they do have options and can save costs by improving lease terms, reducing service charges and gaining a clearer understanding of the rental agreement.”

Charity Bike Challenge - hits the target

Thank you to everyone that supported Mark Chapman in his Zambian Bike Challenge.  He and the rest of the team succeeded in cycling the full 500km in five days across the tough Zambian landscape.  They have so far raised £125,000.  “To say this was life-changing is a little trite – it was an overwhelming experience to see how people are living and coping in the most challenging conditions – we are a group of professionals that wanted to give something back.”
