Designer Group is an international provider of mechanical and electrical services for the construction industry. Following an SBDR, Chapman Consulting were retained by Designer Group to deliver a 2-year programme of marketing and communications projects and ongoing support.
The SBDR website review recommended that a completely new website was required to reflect Designer Group’s standing as a leading, forward-thinking M&E contractor, and this became a high priority project for Chapman Consulting to deliver from end-to-end.
Group CEO Mick Stone later commented “Developing our website to reflect the business we have become and the future possibilities for our continuing growth necessitated a new way of talking about what we do and our new website supported by our updated mission, vision and values is the starting point of that journey.”
It was clear from the outset that was this was a substantial and complex website project. With a wide range of services, covering 13 sectors, across four continents, significant planning was required. The briefing process started with our participation in a Designer Group project steering group, which represented a range of functions across the group, in multiple countries. The group evaluated the existing site versus that of three key competitors, covering aspects such as navigation, branding, USP messaging, ease of finding key information and effectiveness of imagery. From this, and incorporating Chapman Consulting’s recommendations around design, user experience and functionality, the brief was agreed and conceptual work began.
Key to the approach agreed was, unconventionally, structuring the main navigation with headings that related to key tenets of Designer Group’s new vision statement, which along with mission and core values were to be front & centre throughout the website. The design approach also required branding to feature prominently throughout, along with high-quality photography and video. Three conceptual routes were presented to the steering group and one of these was unanimously approved.
After an enforced pause in the project due to the impact of the Covid pandemic first wave, Chapman Consulting played a key role in gathering content, interviewing function heads and providing copywriting and sub-editing for all service and case studies. The site was then built and tested, ensuring optimisation across all device formats.
The client was delighted with their new website. All objectives were met, creating a fresh new look, improved navigation, more dynamic content, increased prominence of brand, culture and vision, an improved careers and section, and the launch of a new blog and news hub.
Finally, in contrast to their previous site, we received a comprehensive and user-friendly content management system so that both content and page layout could be easily updated by the client. This was delivered along with CMS training from Chapman Consulting for all departments in the company responsive for updating content.
